From Resolution to Results: Without Action, Goals Are Simply a Wish
In 2024, I had the great pleasure of turning 50! This year, I will celebrate 29 years in the human capital industry. Over the years, I have watched countless professionals wish and hope for a better outcome for their career, their income, their development, and more. The one constant is that there is very little luck in life. Those who put the time in, even when no one is watching, are the ones who excel both personally and professionally.
Sure, we can all put ourselves in a position to access more opportunities. However, I would argue that much of business isn’t about strategy, trends, or luck—instead, it’s about execution. Executing on a plan. Executing on an intention. It’s about taking action! We are in control of our own destiny.
As 2025 begins, many professionals find themselves caught in the resolution cycle. Fueled by ambition and good intentions, we set lofty goals for personal and professional growth. Yet, studies suggest that by February, most resolutions fade into oblivion. Why? The answer lies in the lack of a structured plan to execute, monitor, and hold oneself accountable.
The same phenomenon often plays out in the business world. Organizations set grand objectives for the year ahead, but without a robust strategy to execute and measure progress, these goals remain nothing more than corporate wish lists.
Goals Without a Plan Are Just Wishes
Social psychology offers valuable insights into why even the most talented individuals fail to achieve their goals. Renowned psychologist Edwin Locke’s Goal-Setting Theory highlights the importance of clarity and specificity in setting goals. His research indicates that clearly defined objectives lead to higher performance compared to vague aspirations. But clarity alone isn’t enough. The theory emphasizes that achieving challenging goals requires consistent feedback and a commitment to accountability.
This principle applies not only to individuals but also to teams and organizations. Consider this: in sports, teams spend countless hours practicing, strategizing, and reviewing performance to prepare for competition. Yet in the professional realm, even highly skilled and intelligent teams often skip these crucial steps, expecting performance to happen spontaneously.
Social Psychology and High Performance
Research on group dynamics and accountability, such as that by Albert Bandura on self-efficacy and collective efficacy, demonstrates that individuals and teams perform better when they:
- Break Goals into Manageable Steps: Setting smaller, actionable milestones increases the likelihood of achieving larger objectives.
- Create Feedback Loops: Regular progress reviews provide opportunities to adjust strategies and stay on track.
- Leverage Social Accountability: Sharing goals with others—whether a mentor, team, or peer group—increases commitment and fosters a culture of accountability.
- Practice Together: Just like athletes, professionals who simulate challenges, role-play scenarios, or engage in continuous learning perform better under pressure.
A Business Case for Execution
Imagine a finance team tasked with streamlining a company’s budgeting process. Without a detailed roadmap—including timelines, responsibilities, and measurable outcomes—the initiative is likely to falter. In contrast, HR teams that implement structured programs for leadership development see far greater success when they include clear action plans, regular check-ins, and performance metrics.
Strategies for Turning Resolutions into Reality
- Define SMART Goals: Ensure your goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
- Develop an Execution Plan: Identify resources, allocate responsibilities, and outline a timeline for each step.
- Monitor and Adapt: Use tools like dashboards, progress reports, or regular check-ins to track success.
- Engage in “Deliberate Practice”: Borrowing from Anders Ericsson’s research on expertise, professionals should focus on specific skills or tasks, receive immediate feedback, and continuously refine their approach.
- Harness the Power of Collaboration: Foster an environment where team members hold each other accountable and share in the collective success.
A New Year, A New Mindset
As HR and accounting and finance professionals, we’re uniquely positioned to influence organizational culture and drive meaningful change. Let’s commit to moving beyond good intentions. Whether planning leadership initiatives, streamlining financial processes, or improving team dynamics, the formula is the same: clarity, practice, and accountability.
This year, let’s rewrite the narrative. Resolutions don’t have to fail. By applying the principles of social psychology and adopting a disciplined approach, we can transform wishes into actionable, measurable achievements. The difference between good intentions and real success is execution. Let’s make it happen.
